BT delivers first successful trial of live streaming technology

As the demand for live content rises, BT Group aims to deliver faster streaming to an even greater number of devices with MAUD

In late 2023, BT Group launched Multicast-Assisted Unicast Delivery (MAUD) to enhance live video streaming. A year later, BT has delivered its first successful trial using BBC Two content on EE’s set-top box TV platform.

Live events continue to drive significant online traffic. During Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour, the artist broke records for the most mobile data used during a standalone concert at Wembley Stadium. Similarly, over 11.5 million homes streamed a match featuring teams from the UK at Euro 2024.

To manage this record-breaking traffic, BT Group developed MAUD in partnership with Broadpeak, a leading Content Delivery Network (CDN) provider. Qwilt then helped BT Group deploy the MAUD solution with Open Edge technology.

The trial demonstrated MAUD’s ability to improve network efficiency. Over 60% of traffic was converted from unicast to multicast delivery by MAUD.

BT Group is now looking to expand its scope to include more channels. The company also plans to test the addition of dynamic ad insertion for a personalised ad experience.

While BT Group makes advances in live streaming, the FEED team looked into how the broadcasting leader balances content delivery with customer behaviour.
