ChatGPT market share falls as Microsoft Copilot surges

The AI chatbot race is heating up in 2025. While ChatGPT still leads in global market share, Microsoft Copilot is quickly closing the gap
According to data presented by Stocklytics, ChatGPT’s market share has slipped by nearly 5% in just two months. AI chatbots like DeepSeek, Google Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot are each increasing in popularity, vying for top spot.
As the youngest player in the industry, DeepSeek has shaken up the AI chatbot market. Launched in January, this Chinese app pushed OpenAI to release rapid updates to ChatGPT. Additionally, its release prompted Google to speed up improvements to Gemini, fuelling a race to build the most advanced and widely used chatbot. Nevertheless, it’s Microsoft Copilot that seems to be making the greatest strides within the industry.
But what has driven this sudden shift in Microsoft Copilot’s popularity? The AI chatbot’s seamless integration into everyday Microsoft tools like Windows, Office, Outlook, Excel and Teams has made it accessible for millions of users. These built-in AI tools make it easier for individuals and businesses to adopt Copilot without changing platforms.
Statcounter data shows that ChatGPT’s market share dropped from 84.21% in April to 79.86% in June, marking a considerable decline in just two months. At the same time, Microsoft Copilot’s share surged, particularly in the US.
As competition intensifies, the AI chatbot race in 2025 is no longer just about which platform is most advanced, but also which can best integrate AI tools. The coming months will be crucial in determining whether ChatGPT can reclaim lost ground or if Microsoft Copilot will continue its rapid rise.
