Sony’s HDC-F5500V camera makes live production debut at Wembley Stadium

In an epic heavyweight showdown at Wembley Stadium, Sony’s HDC-F5500V camera technology captured every cinematic moment of Usyk’s championship victory
At Wembley Stadium, Usyk claimed his second heavyweight title in a thrilling bout against Dubois. The fight not only captivated fans worldwide but also showcased the world’s first live broadcast use of Sony’s HDC-F5500V. The “Serial Number 1” camera was used to capture emotion-filled cinematic visuals for DAZN’s production of the event, following their recent partnership with Techex and TAG for the FIFA Club World Cup broadcast.
The HDC-F5500V builds on Sony’s successful HDC-F5500 platform. This next-generation live production system camera incorporates a single Super 35mm global shutter CMOS sensor and introduces variable ND filter functionality. This filter gives better control over exposure, creating cinematic images with a shallow depth of field that bring live sports, music and events closer to viewers.
Livewhire, a UK rental house, provided the HDC-F5500V – along with additional Sony equipment – for the production. For this project, three existing Sony HDC-F5500 cameras were upgraded to the new “V” configuration. Top-Teks then facilitated the initial delivery and collaborated with Sony on early technical support.
Mike Thomas, managing director of Top-Teks, said, “We are increasingly seeing the Super 35mm HDC-F5500 used in live events where a more cinematic feel is required; the V version gives exposure controls that are normally specific to Sony’s Cinema Line making production much happier to use a system camera rather than a cine camera with fibre attachment.”
