Pebble provides multi-channel playout for SRF facility

SRF recently partnered with Pebble to provide multi-channel playout to leverage modern, standards-based technologies

In line with SRF’s move to new headquarters in Zurich, the Swiss broadcaster turned to Pebble to provide multi-channel playout. As a leading automation and integrated channel specialist, Pebble took on the task of developing SRF’s workflows and operational practices.

The project involved collaboration with multiple vendors to achieve seamless workflows in the all-IP environment. As a result of this collaboration, one of the largest media environments in Europe now uses SMPTE ST 2110 equipment.

Central to the new facility is the secure playout of the three premium channels in German-speaking Switzerland. Pebble manages the different versions of these channels using Pebble’s Integrated Channel software devices, under the control of Pebble Automation.

A key aspect of the project was integrating the playout system into the broader media flow across IP networks. When content is needed, it is pulled from central storage servers and placed into the Integrated Channel devices. This integration is achieved by using the NMOS protocol from AMWA as the interface across the entire environment.

The Pebble system routinely delivers live and pre-recorded content. Pebble Automation adds live graphics by controlling Vizrt graphics operating as plug-ins, while audio processing includes channel management, Dolby E and loudness monitoring.

Martin Sauter, SRF project manager, commented on the collaboration, saying, “Pebble understood the challenges we faced and sought to work with us closely every step of the way to achieve the common goal of a successful ST 2110 playout centre that fulfils our needs.”
