Combat fake news with Sony’s video verification tech

Sony advances video verification for companies with its Camera Authenticity Solution, giving news outlets tools to ensure footage is AI-free and C2PA-compliant

As AI-generated content spreads faster than ever, Sony is stepping up to ensure the news we see is real. The company’s new initiative expands the Camera Authenticity Solution to cover video content, providing news organisations with the industry’s first system of its kind. Fully compliant with C2PA standards, it reliably verifies the authenticity of digital content.

To begin, this paid service is being provided to news organisations, giving them the ability to verify that video comes from a real camera. It also lets teams quickly check specific clips while preserving authenticity signatures, making it easier to handle large files.

Beyond verifying that video content is not generated by AI, the system uses proprietary metadata to confirm that videos depict real subjects. This process incorporates 3D depth information from the camera for added accuracy.

On top of all this, Sony’s cloud-based collaboration platform, Ci Media Cloud, will now display C2PA-compliant digital signature information.

After introducing the PXW-Z300, the world’s first authenticity-ready camera for video, Sony is now adding C2PA-compliant provenance recording to other models. Currently, the Alpha 1 II, Alpha 9 III, Cinema Line FX3 and FX30 can record this information directly into video files. Support for interchangeable-lens cameras Alpha 7R V, Alpha 7 IV, Alpha 1 will roll out from November 2025, and the Alpha 7S III is scheduled to be supported from 2026 onwards.

Sony is stepping up video authenticity, testing its technology in collaboration with the BBC to ensure real, verifiable content. With these announcements, the company aims to bolster the credibility of video content in news reporting.
