SMPTE’s latest report explores AI in media technology

SMPTE’s 2025 Engineering Report examines AI in media, its impact on the industry, ethical considerations and how standards can guide the future of media

SMPTEthe home of media professionals, technologists and engineers, has released a comprehensive document on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its impact on the media industry. Developed with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and the Entertainment Technology Center (ETC), this updated version of the 2023 Engineering Report reflects the work of a dedicated Task Force on AI standards, which has been shaping industry guidance since 2020.

“The AI in Media landscape is evolving at an unprecedented pace, and the SMPTE AI Task Force remains committed to keeping up with this transformation,” says Thomas Bause Mason, standards director at SMPTE. “The revision to the Engineering Report reflects new developments such as the Model Context Protocol (MCP), enhanced security considerations, open source in AI and emerging frameworks like ISO/IEC 42001 among others.”

The aim of this new report is to provide media professionals with a background of both AI and Machine Learning (ML). It begins with a summary of the two technologies followed by the effect they will likely have on the media landscape. The report then moves on to examine AI ethics and ends by discussing the role that standards can play in the future.

“After publishing the initial version of the report, we quickly recognised that fast-breaking developments in AI necessitated updates to the content to keep it relevant,” says Fred Walls, task force co-chair and AMD Fellow.
