Brainstorm: Hyperrealistic PTZs

Posted on Jun 13, 2025 by FEED Staff

Accessible tools like PTZs make VP scalable, immersive and cost-effective

Hyperrealistic virtual production is becoming increasingly popular due to its storytelling advantages, cost savings and sustainability. While many still associate VP with high-end, resource-intensive workflows, today’s technology proves otherwise. Software solutions and affordable tools such as PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) cameras, from vendors like Panasonic, Sony, Canon, Telycam and many others, have made VP more accessible and scalable.

Whether using a basic set-up with PTZ cameras and a green screen or advancing to more complex systems with large LED video walls and high-end tracked cameras, VP can now meet a range of needs and budgets.

PTZs offer video and tracking while keeping costs and workflow complexity low. Compared to expensive tracking systems and high-end cameras, PTZs are an efficient alternative. They work seamlessly with techniques like XR set extension to enable the creation of immersive virtual environments with minimal resources. For example, a small LED wall with PTZs can achieve striking results, while chroma screens offer greater flexibility in many cases.

At ISE 2025, Brainstorm partnered with Alfalite, a leading European LED manufacturer, to showcase how hyperrealistic VP can be achieved with limited resources. Showcasing InfinitySet Lite, the newest addition to Brainstorm’s renowned product line-up, along with Alfalite’s LED volumes and PTZs from various vendors, the demonstration featured virtual environments created by Argonauts XR. These ranged from cinematic backgrounds designed with photogrammetry to a broadcast set hosting fireside chats, including augmented reality (AR) graphics integrated into the scenes.

Brainstorm are pioneering talent teletransport, a feature enabling remote live acting

One standout feature demonstrated at the event was talent teletransport, remote individuals captured on a green screen being seamlessly integrated into the LED virtual set. This technology allows for virtually bringing people from anywhere in the world to a live set, eliminating the need for physical presence. Applications include corporate presentations, remote education or live shows where time, resources, or availability prevent physical attendance.

The combination of PTZs with cost-effective solutions like InfinitySet Lite demonstrates that high-quality VP doesn’t require extensive resources. InfinitySet Lite simplifies complex workflows while delivering professional-grade results, making it an ideal solution for broadcasters, production houses and corporate users alike.

As technology continues to evolve, VP is becoming more accessible, flexible and cost-effective. The many possibilities it offers – enhanced storytelling, resource efficiency and immersive experiences – highlight how it’s revolutionising the way that content is created.
