At a time of on-demand content, there is still an important space for live production – primarily for sports, but also for shows, events and live breaking news. Crews must be on-site where the action happens, producing content live for an enticing experience. Live sports events range from major games such as the Super Bowl to local and regional matches. Naturally, the size and complexity of the truck or van sent to the event is a function of the importance of the event.

For a premier event with on-site production, there will be many cameras and audio feeds, and one or more large trucks will roll. Nowadays, such trucks are based on SMPTE ST 2110 baseband video over IP. In this environment, Cobalt Digital can supply the gateway and processing elements. If the cameras are not native ST 2110, the Cobalt INDIGO OG 2110-BIDI4-GATEWAY can provide a high-density conversion solution. For native ST 2110 processing, the Cobalt 9904-UDX-4K and the 9905 MPx cards with the INDIGO 2110-DC-01 option can provide colour correction, HDR processing, audio mixing and more, without the need to convert back to baseband video. For remote production, the Cobalt PACIFIC 9992-ENC-INDIGO can offer ultra low-latency encoding directly from ST 2110 inputs, to be received by the Cobalt PACIFIC ULL-DEC Decoder. For local monitoring, the Cobalt UltraBlue IP-MV is a great multiviewer solution.

What about smaller events and simpler OB vans? Uncompressed baseband video is nice, but the cost is still too high for these applications – for now, they need to use the traditional baseband video over SDI.  All the solutions mentioned are also available with SDI baseband inputs for this market segment.

Moreover, Cobalt offers the WAVE series of routers and control panels, including the WAVE RTR-64×64 router and a range of membrane and LCD control panels to suit various needs and budgets. The Cobalt WAVE control panels feature open architecture and API support, allowing customisation for any environment.

Regardless of the application size, Cobalt has a solution that fits, with common controls and the flexibility to customise for specific needs.
